Our weight management clinic is much more than just a ‘fat club’. New patients are medically assessed and may be offered blood tests if there is suspicion of underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome or thyroid disease.
Once these conditions are excluded, you can be started on the latest prescription only medicines for weight loss. These are called Saxenda and Ozempic.
Under normal circumstances, when the stomach fills up it releases a chemical that tells the brain you have had enough to eat. Some people call it the ‘satiety hormone’. However, many of us who like our food tend to override this feeling of fullness and eat more – because it’s nice!
Saxenda is a medicine that imitates the ‘satiety hormone’ and makes your brain think you are full and not hungry. Most patients say that if faced with a normal meal they can only manage a small amount of it and feel full. Clearly this will lead to steady weight loss without the usual suffering of hunger and bad moods.
The daily dose is increased slightly each week and we stop when the patient says their appetite is sufficiently controlled. Once we reach this point, we have the option to change the Saxenda daily dosing to Ozempic, which is the weekly version and hence more convenient.
Once the patient reaches their target weight then the dose can be reduced and stopped now the body and mind have become accustomed to your new eating habits
